Rhodiola
has been used by Tibetans as a traditional herbal, anti-stress
remedy and adaptogen for more than 1000 years. An adaptogen
is defined as a substance that has no toxicity or side effects
at normal dosages and that non-specifically increases the
body's resistance to disease and to physical and chemical
stresses. Put another way, use of
Rhodiola as an adaptogenic herb will safely assist the body
to combat stress by maintaining its homeostatic balance
and in recovering from the effects of adverse weather, emotions,
and disease influences. Furthermore, studies conducted
at the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems at the
Russian Federation Ministry of Health show that Rhodiola
can help increase protein synthesis, remove ammonia from
the blood and have a detoxifying effect while increasing
blood supply to the muscles and the brain, and improving
athletic performance.
Dating
back to 760 AD, Rhodiola was first used by Tibetans to preserve
body health and treat disease. It
is recorded and published in Tibetan manuscripts that Rhodiola
can support vital energy, help the body to resist stress,
enrich the blood, strengthen the brain, improve intelligence,
and provide nourishment to preserve health. Tibetan
Rhodiola has been used for centuries to treat dysentery,
back pain, lung inflammation, painful and irregular menstruation,
leukorrhea, epidemic diseases, edema of the limbs, traumatic
injury, and to heal burns and eliminate poisonous substances
from the body.
Recently,
various preparations of Rhodiola, alone or compounded into
prescriptions, are produced and more widely applied in clinical
practices to prevent and treat various diseases in China.
Through clinical application, Rhodiola preparations have
proved effective to reinforce physical strength, enhance
body endurance, compensate hypoxia, relieve tiredness and
weakness, improve efficiency of physical and mental work,
treat cardiac and pulmonary diseases and supplement the
chemotherapy and radiotherapy of cancers. Based
on the indications for use, Rhodiola appears to be cooling
and detoxifying, and vitalizes blood circulation.
Studies
on Pharmacology
- Hypoxia-resistant
Effect
A water experiment was done whereby test subjects
swam for one hour at altitudes of 5000 and 10,000 meters.
With the use of Rhodiola in the treatment, the blood lactic
acid was significantly lower than that of those in the
control group. Additionally, one of the adaptogenic applications
of Rhodiola that has received considerable research attention
recently is for aiding adaptation to high altitudes, thus,
as a preventive and treatment for mountain sickness.
- Fatigue-relieving
Effect
Rhodiola has been shown to significantly allow
for improvements in athletic performance and to delay
fatigue by improving energy utilization during exercise.
Rhodiola has even been linked to increased creatine phosphate
and ATP (energy) levels. All of this leads scientists
to believe that supplemental Rhodiola may increase strength
and lean body mass. Researchers speculate that Rhodiola
helps reduce the stress that occurs secondary to exercise
by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which
causes relaxation (as opposed to the sympathetic nervous
system which causes stimulation).
- Anti-aging
Effect
Crenulatin, a chemical component of Rhodiola,
has been found to inhibit the production of lipid peroxide
in liver cells and save those cells from death. It can
also enhance the activity of serum SOD (a natural anti-oxidant
in the body and a key enzyme in the metabolism of oxygen),
clear free radicals, and improve viral activity of cells.
Crenulatin could retard the growth and proliferation of
tumors from human lung tissue and reduce mortality rate.
- Radiation-resistance
& Anti-tumor Effect
Rhodiola extract has a central stimulant action that increases
the body's tolerance to microwave irradiation by protecting
the hematopoietic system, which regulates the growth and
formation of tumors. Rhodiola can help regulate brain
function, leukocyte count, blood glucose, and promotes
protein hydrolysis all the while enhancing the functions
of the thyroid gland, adrenals, and ovaries.
- Adjustment
on Metabolism
The administration of a Rhodiola preparation could
prolong the endurance of muscles and promote catabolism
of proteins. Both Muscle proteins and glutamic acid levels
have been shown to be enhanced when supplementing with
Rhodiola. Rhodiola can prolong the loading time of muscles
and the timely restoration of normal metabolism after
extreme exercise.
Evidence
has shown that Tibetan Rhodiola is, in many ways, even more
powerful than Ginseng. It is a superb
herb for people who work very hard, either physically or
mentally. Tibetan Rhodiola has been shown to improve endurance
and mental capacity, including memory enhancement.
It has been shown to be a superb tonic and energizer for
those into physical fitness, and a superior tonic for those
stuck behind a desk or at a computer terminal for long periods
of time. Consumption of even small amounts of Rhodiola extract
significantly improves a person's capacity to absorb and
utilize oxygen.
Clinical
Application
Many clinical research institutes and hospitals
in Tibet and China have carried out clinical therapeutic
evaluations of Rhodiola. In these studies, Rhodiola was
proved effective to treat weakness, poor appetite, heart
palpitations, dizziness, chest distress and insomnia. The
herb could also increase hemoglobin in the blood, increase
platelet count, and reduce heart rate. It also could effectively
prevent harmful effects of high altitude on cardiac and
pulmonary functions. After Rhodiola was used to treat patients
with coronary heart disease, attacks of angina pectoris
were relieved along with the partial blood oxygen pressure
of the arteries and arterial blood oxygen saturation was
elevated.
Conclusion
Tibetan Rhodiola crenulata has proven to be a superb
herbal therapy for natural health enhancement. Strong cardiovascular
properties that enhance performance have led the Chinese
Olympic athletics and Russian Military and Space program
to use Rhodiola for the past 10 years. Rhodiola is rich
in glycosides, essential amino acids, and microelements.
Rhodiola has the incredible effect of purifying the blood
and improving blood quality. It can also relieve headaches,
release and delay fatigue, delay senility, strengthen memory,
and bolster the immune system. Rhodiola
is one of the most powerful, all-natural herbal extracts
available with no known side-effects for helping the body
to combat stress and adapt to the most taxing of environments.
Suggested
Usage: SHAKE WELL before each use. For
regimental use, take 3-4 sprays 3 times per day, spray under
the tongue, and hold for 30 seconds before swallowing. Additional
sprays may be taking throughout the day during times of
stress.
Precautions: Generally
speaking, there is no known toxicity for Rhodiola in recommended
dosages. However, as a safety measure, it is wise to consult
your physician if you are already taking substances that
affect serotonin levels. It is also recommended that pregnant
or nursing women consult a physician before use. Do no use
in children under the age of 2 without physician consultation.
