Kinesiology
Why We Use It

You may have heard it called muscle testing or AK or Applied Kinesiology. Chiropractors often use it to check for the effects certain supplements may have when taken by their patient. Usually kinesiology is done with an arm held out to the side as the doctor asks the patient to resist as she pushes the arm down.

If the benefits of the supplement in question make the body strong, the arm will remain strong. If the effects of the supplement in question is less than beneficial to the patient then the arm will go weak and is easily pushed down by the doctor, even though the patient is resisting the downward pressure.

When clients and I work by phone, we also use kinesiology to test for beliefs held in the unconscious mind. I like to teach a different method than the one I just described, when working by phone since most clients are alone during our sessions. There are many ways to do muscle testing (kinesiology), so I will describe two of them here.

1.  Standing

  • Be sure your body is well hydrated. (Drink at least one full glass of water before testing your unconscious for answers.)
  • Stand up.
  • Relax your hands at your sides.
  • Close your eyes if you feel comfortable.
  • Your body will lean forward for "yes" or "true", backward for "no" or "false".

Begin by making obvious statements as a way of checking to be sure your body is well hydrated. State an obviously true statement, something like "I have brown hair. " if you hair is indeed brown.  Wait for your body to lean whichever way it goes.  If your body goes forward and that statement is true for you, then you are doing great.  If your body leans backward even though the statement is true, then keep reading and you will find some ideas on how to get opposite answers going the way that will make sense.  Now make a statement that is false, such as "My hair is purple. " Wait for your body to answer.

With practice you can learn to sense the accuracy of your answers. If you are getting strange answers to these obvious ones, then you may need more water.  Try a few grains of salt.  Placing your hands on your back and massaging your kidneys for a minute or so will help hydrate you quickly. Then try again with obvious statements.

Once you feel your answers are solid, then you can begin testing for beliefs. Here are a few tips on how your unconscious communicates:

  • Your unconscious mind needs simplicity and clarity.
  • Be sure to make statements rather than questions.
  • Word your statements to avoid "not" "isn't" "don't" and so on.

Your unconscious mind hears and understands only positively worded statements, not so much positive in the meaning of the statement, but positive in the way the statement is worded. For example: "I don't like myself" may be a statement you want to test to see what you believe. However you are actually testing "I like myself" since "don't" may be misunderstood. So your answers could be a mismatch to the question you are asking.

To test the intended belief you would need to say "I like myself." You would get a "yes" or "no" then you and I would work based on that answer. You could even test "I hate myself". It is the "not" that gets confusing for your unconscious.

Remember you are testing your own unconscious mind. Do not expect to get  accurate information about things like

  • the future
  • what others are thinking
  • lost items
  • decisions you need to make

You are simply creating a way for your unconscious mind to speak to you about what it believes to be true for you.

2.  Linking Fingers

This one seems to depend less on your body being well hydrated than the standing up method. You can also do this test while sitting, standing or even lying down.

  • Touch your pointer finger and your thumb together to make an “O” on each hand.
  • Link them together like two chain links.

When you make a statement to be tested you will put the same pressure on this “chain” attempting to gently pull one of the links through the other, while attempting to keep the links formed. The point is not to pull through, but to be able to notice if it was easy to pull through or hard to pull through.

With practice you learn to feel that you are putting equal pressure on your fingers and a “true” or “yes” answer will hold tight, while a “No” or “False” answer will result in your fingers coming apart as one loop breaks through the other loop. So a “Yes” answer holds strong and a “No” answer causes weakness. You can remember this one by remembering that the truth will make you strong.

NOTE: If you notice that your answers are opposite of what you expect, here are couple of things to do to help get them going the way you expect.

  • Move a few steps in any direction and test again. Sometimes there are tiny little energy vortexes that will cause our energy to act a little strange while we are doing muscle testing.
  • Zip and unzip your energy field. This is a motion like zipping and unzipping yourself from your forehead to your navel and back up again.
  • Keep your arms and legs uncrossed while you are testing. Refrain from reaching over your body even as minor as putting your right hand on your heart. If you forget and your answers go opposite, then Zip your energy again as in number 2.

Practice is really the key to getting more fluent in this language of the body. The more you trust it the more accurate you will get with it. There are many complexities to getting trustworthy answers. However, this is a common tool used in many ways, it’s worth the effort to really get the hang of it, especially if you are going to be working with others.

Now that you have an idea of what kinesiology is all about, let's move into why we use it in our telephone sessions.  As you may have gathered by reading so far, we are using muscle testing to discover what beliefs we are carrying around with us.

When we discover these limiting beliefs, then I clear them, energetically.  We can then use the muscle testing to test if that belief is clear.  So that means that if you tested "I love myself." and got a "no", then I go and clear that belief, we will check "I love myself." again and then you will get a "yes".

This is a simple belief structure, but I think you get the idea.  We use kinesiology in the context of clearing beliefs to help you get an indication of what is happening at the energetic level.  Without using muscle testing the process of clearing beliefs seems even less tangible.

At the same time, I want to be very clear that muscle testing is not the energy work itself, it is a way to measure the work we do together.  So, if you can't get your muscle testing to work, it won't have any effect on the clearing itself.  The energy work is completely separate from the kinesiology.

It's like how a clock measures time.  Yet, time has nothing to do with a clock.  Time happens whether you know about it or not.

Are we having fun yet! <Wide smile>
